This outreach program is the brainchild of Vice President Desiree Ramos.
We provide skills training and mentoring to at risk girls at our local continuation high school. The sessions are bi-monthly luncheon meetings, we provide the food and a guest speaker . We had a wonderful presentation recently on interviewing skills, what to wear and what to say. All the girls seemed very engaged with the topic and appreciative of the help. Wednesday, we are off on our first field trip to Kaiser Hospital here in Vacaville. Kaiser hires many entry level workers, not just trained medical professionals. The girls are very excited about this excursion.
Our STEPS committee also did an outreach to find a sponsor for the boys at the continuation high school. They kept asking us for the last year, " What about us?" As mothers and grandmothers of boys we felt guilt. To the rescue, the husband of one of our members stepped up! The STEP IT UP program was launched and is supported by the Boys and Girls Club in Vacaville. A couple of Soroptimists help out on their own and have sponsored a couple of lunches. It costs about $80.00 to buy lunches for the boys. It is a man to man mentoring program. Last week the guest speaker was a Soroptimist who lost her daughter to domestic violence. Patricia Hunter and her son Joseph presented to the boys.
Both programs represent our Soroptimist mission of improving the lives of women and girls. This local education impact project has brought in several new members who read about it in our local media. We are proud of our efforts and truly believe we are Changing Lives one STEP at a time.
