Soroptimist International of Vacaville, a women's service organization, is looking for an outstanding young woman from Vacaville majoring in fine arts or wine making to apply for the Mary Harris Memorial Scholarship. The winner will receive $9,000, paid out in $3,000 installments over three years.
Mary Harris was a longtime Soroptimist and local businesswoman, well known for her fashionable style and elegance. Although her bachelor’s degree was in art history, she worked for a number of years in marketing, as director of several malls, including the one in Fairfield. She also owned a Napa vineyard and actively supported the local arts community. She was a proponent of reading and helped establish an afterschool reading program in Vacaville.
Her Soroptimist friends and her family are happy to honor her legacy with this scholarship.
Applicants must either be a graduate of a Vacaville High School or live in Vacaville to qualify. Majors can include visual or performing arts, creative writing, literature, music, dance, culinary arts, graphic design, marketing, fashion, enology or viticulture.
The applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or above, be currently enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university and working toward a degree.
All applications will be judged with anonymity and will be scored based on financial needs, grades, volunteerism, community activities, letters of recommendation and submission of an essay and portfolio of work.
We begin accepting applications in February 2020 and the deadline for applications is April 30, 2020. Electronic submission is encouraged.
